One of the aspects that has defined Mega Man the most since its inception is how he acquires the weapons of the bosses that he defeats. I hated it in MM4 because it drowned out the music in a series where music was a huge draw, and I grew to hate it more in later games because it de-emphasized the defining aspect of the games boss weapons more frequently came across as gimmicks of niche use and the player was expected to lean on the normal shot more often. The charged Mega Buster is my least favorite mainstay game mechanic of the whole series. The weapon set is phenomenal (almost all of them are useful, and in different ways too) and Mega Man's base abilities are stripped back, which encourages more use of the boss weapons. As such, one of the factors that is the most indicative of the overall quality of a Mega Man game is the quality of the set of robot master weapons in that game.Īnd that's one of the main reasons why MM9 towers over the other games in the series to me. It's basically one of the main draws of the game to me.
